According to the latest monthly Industrial Property Bulletin issued by the BRPTO, in the first 10 months of 2018 the number of patent applications awaiting a decision in the examination queue does not stop falling. This trend can be confirmed when we compare the numbers of October 2017 (227,498 pending patent applications) and October 2018 (209,671 pending patent applications). The same trend is observed for the pending applications of industrial designs – in the same period, the number fell from 10,044 to less than half: 3,482.
When analyzing a longer period, for example, the period from 2014 to 2018, the decisions issued by BRPTO examiners increased from 22,336 in 2014 to 42,720 in 2018. The grant decisions also rose, from 3,123 in 2014 to 11,052 in 2018.
Although the number of patent applications awaiting a final decision is still high by international standards, the series of measures that the BRPTO has adopted over the years already show encouraging results in terms of reducing the backlog.
